Japan-Chile Foreign Ministers' Meeting

On September 20, commencing at 4:15 p.m. (local time; 5:15 a.m. on September 21 JST) for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs, who is visiting New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, held a meeting with H.E. Ms. Antonia URREJOLA Noguera, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Chile. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Hayashi expressed his pleasure to hold this face-to-face meeting, following the video conference in February this year, and stated Japan’s willingness to work together with Chile as countries bordering the Pacific Ocean, including towards the realization of a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)". The two Ministers shared the view that the two countries are to deepen cooperation as strategic partners which share fundamental values for the stability of the international community, including the Indo-Pacific region.
  2. Minister Hayashi reiterated Japan’s hope for Chile’s prompt ratification of CPTPP. He also expressed Japan’s intention to further strengthen the bilateral relations, including through high–level visits. Minister Urrejola expressed Chile’s willingness to work together to strengthen the bilateral ties on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year.
  3. The two Ministers reaffirmed the importance of strengthening the functions of the United Nations as a whole, including the Security Council reform, amid an unstable international order and given the growing importance of upholding the rule of law, and confirmed that they would work together to address various issues facing the international community, including the response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
  4. The two Ministers also exchanged views on regional situations and cooperation in the international arena, and share the intention to cooperate closely in various areas to further strengthen the bilateral relations.
