This is the first comprehensive development plan drafted by African countries. The plan aims for poverty reduction, sustainable growth and development, and the integration of Africa into global economics, and sets African ownership and responsibility, pacifism and democracy, human rights, good leadership, sound economy management, and sincere partnerships with international society (rejection of aid dependency) as its principals. This is the October 2001 renamed version of the New Africa Initiative (NAI) that was adopted in July 2001 at the Organization of African Unity (OAU) Summit.
