ITTO is an international institution that was established in 1986 and is headquartered in Japan (Yokohama). Its goal is to balance environmental conservation in countries with tropical forests with promotion of the tropical timber trade in order to contribute to economic development in developing countries for which tropical forests are a valuable resource. ITTO is composed of 59 countries, including 33 producing countries and 26 consumer countries, as well as the European Community (EC) is also a member. The members represent approximately 80% of the world's tropical forests and more than 90% of the global tropical timber trade.
