This declaration was adopted as the goal of the international community in the 21st century by the 189 member countries, including the 147 heads of state, that participated in the UN Millennium Summit held in New York in September 2000. The Millennium Declaration specified the role of the UN in the 21st Century, setting as priority issues peace and security, development and poverty, the environment, human rights and good governance, and the special needs of Africa.
