The G8 agreed to jointly address the issue of agricultural and rural development in countries with unstable food supply, and to launch three new initiatives under the framework of Action Against Famine Especially in Africa - A G8 Action Plan of the Evian Summit. Specifically, agreements were made to break the cycle of famine in the "horn of Africa," to improve worldwide emergency assessment and response systems, and to increase agricultural productivity and promote rural development, particularly in African countries with unstable food supply.
