4. Follow-up Measures after Evaluation

Post-evaluation follow-up involves feeding the evaluation findings back into the implementation process to benefit the management of a particular project, and providing lessons for the formulation of future aid strategies and formation of new projects. When the evaluation process identifies specific areas for improvement, various options may be canvassed, including the dispatch of new expert teams, provision of spare parts, extension of the implementation period, or the implementation of supplementary projects. If the cause of a problem can be traced to the recipient country, discussions to resolve the issue may ensue at a government level or with staff of the implementing agency.
Examples highlighted in the 1997 evaluation report include that of the Improvement of the Facilities of the Out-patient Department of the Vincente Satto Memorial Medical Center in the Philippines, where repairs were effected to address a problem with the configuration of the Center's X-ray imaging equipment. Another involved the Project of Research and Control of Microbial Disease in Ecuador, where budget shortfalls meant that difficulties were faced with procuring new equipment to replace aging but well-utilized models. Grant aid was provided as part of a remedial strategy, allowing the purchase of a new electron microscope and other up-to-date equipment.
