Can figure skaters
wear any costume they like? The
sport of figure skating is an old one,
having been popular among noble families
in Europe during the late 1600s. It
demands not only quick and accurate
motions, but grace and elegance as well.
Olympic skaters compete on the basis of
their technique and expressive skills,
and their clothing must reflect that:
They must wear costumes appropriate to a
sporting event. Showy theatrical designs
and animal costumes are not allowed. A
skater's costume is acceptable so long as
it goes well with the music chosen for
the performance.
Female competitors are required to
wear skirts, and male skaters long pants.
Tights and sleeveless tops are off
limits, as are earrings and other
accessories. The most important aspect of
figure skating is the technical and
expressive ability of the skaters, not
how they are dressed. The skater can even
lose points if the judges decide that a
costume is inappropriate for the
performance!
