| How fast are ski
jumpers going when they leave the ramp?
To go as far as 90 meters (300 feet) on
the normal hill and 120 meters (400 feet)
on the large hill, ski jumpers fly
through the air at between 80 and 90
kilometers per hour (50 and 56 miles per
hour). To get up to those speeds,
athletes must bend their knees, lean
forward with their arms stretched back,
and then hurtle down the ramp in an
instant. The gradient is around 35
degrees, but skiers say it seems like 60
degrees or more from the starting point.
At the moment of the jump, skiers look as
though they shoot straight off of the
ramp, leaning forward. But because the
lip of the ramp is actually angled down,
they have to time it just right and jump
upward just as they leave the ramp. After
that they place their body and skis to
catch the wind and leave everything up to
gravity.
