How fast do the men's
downhill skiers go? Downhill
skiers can go as fast as 140 kilometers
per hour (85 miles per hour)--faster than
the speed limit on most freeways! Their
average speed is over 100 kph (60 mph).
Even the air slows the skiers down at
these speeds, so they crouch down to make
themselves aerodynamic. There are three
jumps on the course, where the skiers try
to make their time in the air as short as
possible. They train very hard to build
strong bodies that can stand up to the
fierce winds created by their speed. If
they don't pay attention to all these
things--their technique, condition,
strength, and courage--they will not be
able to shave fractions of a second from
their times to become champion skiers.
