School Ski Club Fires
Up Crowd at Mt. Yakebitai (February 20)
On February 19, the members of the
Yamanouchi Middle School Alpine Ski Club
headed to Mt. Yakebitai for the women's
slalom event. We didn't just go to see
the skiing; before the athletes raced, we
participated in the Flag Ceremony.
In the Flag Ceremony, elementary and
middle school students from Yamanouchi
Town skied down the race course carrying
the flags of the athletes competing that
day. The crowd that had gathered to see
the event got excited during the
ceremony. When we went up the chair lift
to the top of the course, we saw all the
Olympic athletes there, waiting to do
their runs.
We skied down with the flags, one
after another. The course was really
hard, and it was scary to be sliding down
it! While we skied down, thinking that
the world's top skiers were about to use
the same slope, it really felt like we
were doing something special. (Report
from Yamanouchi Middle School)
