Kristi Yamaguchi
Visits Nagano School (February 14)
Figure skating gold medalist Kristi
Yamaguchi of the United Sates visited our
school on February 12. I was too young to
remember, but some of you may know her as
the winner of the women's singles at the
1992 Albertville Games.
Our school is participating in the
One School, One Country program of the
Nagano city government, under which each
school learns about and roots for a
particular country represented at the
Games. Kristi made a visit to our school
because the country chosen for us was the
United States.
Kristi is working now as a goodwill
ambassador for the Salt Lake City
Games--the Winter Olympics to be held
after Nagano in 2002. She said she still
skates and works out in the summer on
roller blades. She said that one of the
memorable things about the Nagano Games
was the victory by speed skater Hiroyasu
Shimizu in the 500-meter race.
Her message to us before she left was
to always pursue your dream. If you
believe in yourself and try hard to
achieve it, she said, the effort will
always pay off.
