Kids' Art Brightens
Downtown Nagano (February 11)
The main street of downtown Nagano City,
where victory ceremonies are held every
evening during the Olympic Games, is now
the site of an exhibition of art created
by children from around the world. The
kids' works were entries in an art
contest with the theme, "Heroes of
the Winter Olympics." In all, 26
works of art were chosen for the
exhibition, and the grand prize went to
"Father," a work by an
11-year-old boy from Poland. His picture
shows his ski-jumping dad flying through
the air. Not just his picture, but every
work of art, was very well drawn. You
could really sense the artists'
confidence in their creations.
On February 8, the prize-winning
artists were invited to Nagano City to
work on a huge mural with some local
children. The theme of this event was
"Heartfelt Images of My
Hometown." The kids drew pictures of
Manhattan, the Canadian flag, and even
the Snowlets, the mascots for the Nagano
Games. The display also featured some
carved stone statues of Jizo, a Buddha
said to protect children. I thought it
was a good sign for the future that this
child protector was included in the
artwork. (Report from Shinonoi Nishi
