Cheering On the
Kangaroos (February 5)
As part of the One School, One Country
Program to build friendships between
Nagano students and people around the
world, students at Shinonoi Nishi Middle
School in Nagano City have been working
to support the Australian Olympic squad,
known as "the Kangaroos."
Students have made good-luck charms for
the athletes--cloth bags called omamori
with origami cranes inside--and written
cards to the Aussies wishing them luck in
the events.
"We're making the charms as well
as we can so they won't fall apart after
we give them to the Australian
team," said one student. Another
spoke while sewing a charm: "I'm
making the omamori with care so the
Kangaroos will win their events. Of
course, I also want Japan's athletes to
get some medals!"
Meanwhile, other students worked on
the messages to send to the team from
Down Under. The kids really want the
Australians to do their best. "Go
Kangaroos!" (Report from Shinonoi
Nishi Middle School)
