Will overseas
visitors stay with Japanese families
during the Nagano Games? Because
there'll be so many people coming to
Nagano, it'll be impossible to house them
all--athletes, officials, and
spectators--in one central location. So
some families of foreign athletes and
spectators unable to secure hotel rooms
will be able to stay with local residents
as guests. This will give foreign
visitors a chance to learn about life in
Japan and allow their hosts to increase
their understanding of different
cultures.
A number of steps are being taken to
make the most of this opportunity for
person-to-person exchange. For instance,
host families are studying the languages
of their guests, preparing written
messages in the guest's language, and
planning distinctively Japanese meals.
Families will also be teaching their
guests about unique Japanese customs,
like laying out and folding up the futon
on which people sleep and using the
Japanese bath.
