Now it's time to get on a train and leave Tokyo for Nagano. The train system in Japan is quite well developed and very convenient. People use trains to get to work and to school, of course, but they also take them almost everywhere when they travel for fun. The train to Nagano is a Shinkansen ("bullet train")--one of the fastest trains in the world.

Question: The Shinkansen began operating between Tokyo and Nagano in October 1997. It takes less than an hour and a half to cover the entire route. What is the top speed of this train?

  1. 100 kph (60 mph)
  2. 260 kph (160 mph)
  3. 500 kph (310 mph)
