Heading north from Osaka past Kyoto, you arrive at the Sea of Japan. In the winter, storms from Siberia and China bring lots of snow to the Japan Sea coast. The castle town of Kanazawa, found right in the middle of the west coast of Honshu, boasts a beautiful garden called Kenrokuen. Question: This is a pine tree growing in Kenrokuen. Before winter comes, it is tied in this way with ropes. Why is this?
