Kansai International
Airport was built on an artificial
island. Osaka fronts
directly on the sea, and the airport was
constructed on an island made in Osaka
Bay. The island is connected to the
mainland by a 3.75-kilometer (2.3-mile)
bridge that has two levels--one for cars
and one for trains. To make sure there
would be enough space, and to keep noise
down in the city, it was decided to build
the airport out in the bay.
