Travelers stayed in the
Kiso Valley inns on the 42nd stop of
their journey. In
all, there were 69 areas to stay on the
road from Edo to Kyoto. It was about 300
kilometers (185 miles) to Magome, the
42nd stop. In those days, it took about a
day to walk the 8-10 kilometers (5-7
miles) between the stations on the road.
The group of inns in the Kiso Valley has
been preserved to this day, and some of
them are still in operation! If you
travel to Magome, you can also travel 200
years into the past by staying at one of
these inns.
