Akita Shinkansen
(the Komachi): This bullet
train, which covers the 660 kilometers
(410 miles) between Tokyo and Akita in 3
hours 49 minutes, debuted in March 1997.
Like the Yamagata Shinkansen, it is
capable of running on both conventional
and bullet-train tracks, and it runs on
the Tohoku Shinkansen tracks between
Tokyo and Morioka. Komachi is a word for
the beautiful young women of the Akita
region.
