Nozawa Onsen: Home to Skiers and Hot Springs

Located in northern Nagano Prefecture, the village of Nozawa Onsen is known for its hot springs and as the home of Nozawa-na, a kind of turnip that is pickled in salt and commonly eaten with boiled rice, tea, or alcoholic beverages. With a population of around 4,700, it is a major ski center that has produced many top Olympic athletes and houses the country's only ski museum.

It has flourished since before the Edo period (1600-1868) as a health spa where the sick can soak away their ailments in hot springs. Hot-spring enthusiasts can do a fixed circuit of the local public baths. Nozawa Onsen will host the Biathlon events.
