Yamanouchi: The Place
to Be for Skiers and Monkeys With
half of its area in the Joshin'etsu
National Park, Yamanouchi, a town of
16,000 people, is rich in natural
splendor. Within the town limits is Shiga
Kogen, considered Japan's foremost skiing
area. Every year crowds of skiers are
attracted here by its excellent snow and
rich variety of slopes.
The downtown area has many hot
springs where skiers relax after their
days on the slopes, including
internationally noted Jigokudani, whose
waters are enjoyed not only by
weary-limbed skiers but--especially on
cold, snowy days--by local wild monkeys
as well. In the Nagano Games, Yamanouchi
will be the venue for alpine skiing and
snowboard events.
