EXPO 2005 AICHI JAPAN Message from Commissioner Taizo Watanabe

photo(Taizo Watanabe)The first world exposition in the 21st century is now opened in the heartland of the main island of Japan. The name of the place is Aichi, a very wealthy prefecture surrounded by rich greens, mountains and the sea, and very well known in Japan for abundant historical remains and cultural assets. In addition it is the most active manufacturing center of Japan producing the largest number of automobiles, rockets and robots. The exposition will close on September 25, and more than 15 million visitors are expected to come and enjoy. A new international airport full of intriguing facilities to entertain incoming passengers was opened off the coast of the capital of Nagoya city, in February this year, and all the cities and towns in this region are cooperating with all the participating nations as friendship partners to welcome and satisfy the visitors from those countries. The exposition itself is very much unique and eye-opening. It is held not in the city but in a former youth park surrounded by well preserved nature but easily accessible through modern transportation means using latest technology. It is truly enjoyable and enlightening.

Its theme is 'Nature's Wisdom' intended to make you wonder what should be a way of life in the 21st century to make it possible for human being to coexist with nature which should be conserved and cherished for the sake of our future generations.

Please come and enjoy.

Taizo Watanabe
