Visit to Japan by Mr. Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Interim Self-Government Authority

- Mr. Mahmoud Abbas, the President of the Palestinian Interim Self-Government Authority, will visit Japan from May 15 (Sun) to 17 (Tue) at the invitation of the Government of Japan.
- During his stay in Japan, Mr. Abbas will have talks with Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and other leaders to have close exchanges of views on the Middle East peace process, bilateral relations between Japan and the Palestinian side, and other matters.
- Since there is now a historic opportunity to advance the Middle East peace process, the international community has been intensifying its efforts for peace. Seizing the opportunity of Mr. Abbas's visit to Japan, Japan intends to make summit-level efforts for advancing the Middle East peace process and strengthening the relations between Japan and the Palestinian side.
- This will be Mr. Abbas's second visit to Japan since 1981 and the first visit by the head of the Palestinian Interim Self-Government Authority in the past five years since the late Mr. Yasser Arafat, Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) visited Japan in 2000.
