Ceremony of Unveiling a Plaque Honoring Mr. Chiune Sugihara

  1. A "Ceremony of Unveiling a Plaque Honoring Mr. Chiune Sugihara", hosted by the Foreign Minister, will be held from 14:00, October 10 (Tue), at the Diplomatic Record Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1-5-3 Azabudai, Minato-ku, Tokyo). This plaque is mounted in honor of the late Mr. Chiune Sugihara, who took a humanitarian and courageous decision under the extremely difficult situation, where Jews were persecuted by Nazi.

  2. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Mr. Sugihara's birth. The 10th of October is an anniversary day of the new diplomatic relations since 1991 between Japan and Lithuania, where Mr. Sugihara issued visas for fleeing Jewish people.

  3. The ceremony will be attended by Mrs. Yukiko Sugihara, Mr. Sugihara's widow, and those related to Israel and Lithuania in Japan, among others.
