Japan-Brunei Foreign Ministers' Meeting

Minister for Foreign Affairs Fumio Kishida held talks with His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Brunei Darussalam, for about 30 minutes from 6:10 p.m. on Thursday, February 28 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The following is an overview of the meeting.

  1. On bilateral relations, the two ministers shared the view to take concrete steps towards cooperation in the areas of politics, security, and people-to-people exchanges and to pave the way for the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Brunei next year, based on the outcomes of Minister Kishida’s visit to Brunei in January.
  2. With regard to the issues related to ASEAN, Minister Mohamed explained the views of Brunei as the chair of ASEAN. Minister Kishida stated that Japan will fully support Brunei for the success of this year's ASEAN-related meetings. Bearing in mind that this year is the 40th anniversary of friendship and cooperation between Japan and ASEAN, the two ministers shared the recognition on the importance of Japan-ASEAN relations and shared the view to cooperate for the Japan-ASEAN special summit meeting to be held in the end of the year.
  3. The two ministers also exchanged views on regional situations in Asia, including the South China Sea and North Korea.
