Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the Presidential Election in Armenia

  1. The Government of Japan welcomes the fact that the presidential election of the Republic of Armenia, held on February 18, was conducted in a peaceful and democratic manner, and congratulates H.E. Mr. Serzh Sargsyan, the incumbent President of the Republic of Armenia, on being elected.
  2. International election observation missions including the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) / Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) issued a positive evaluation stating that the election was generally well-administered and was characterized by a respect for fundamental freedoms. The Japanese observer dispatched to the OSCE/ODIHR mission also reported that the election was held peacefully.
  3. The Government of Japan expects that under newly-elected President Sargsyan, all political forces will work together with a view to promoting the stability and development of the Republic of Armenia.
