Courtesy Call on Foreign Minister Kishida by Mr. António Guterres, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees

On Tuesday, February 5, Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call from Mr. António Guterres, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, for approximately 35 minutes from 5:50 pm. An overview of the meeting is as follows:
- Minister Kishida welcomed the visit to Japan by Mr. Guterres and stated that the Government of Japan highly appreciated the activities of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and that Japan's proactive support to the UNHCR is important from the viewpoint of promoting human security. Minister Kishida also requested UNHCR's contribution, mainly in the field of peace and stability, for the success of the Fifth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD V).
- In response, High Commissioner Guterres expressed his gratitude for Japan's continuous support and expressed his expectation toward even closer relationship with Japan, stating that Japan's diplomatic policies and policies of the UNHCR have much in common, such as human security.
- Minister Kishida and High Commissioner Guterres also exchanged opinions on the situations in Syria, the Sahel region, Myanmar, etc.
