Meeting between Mr. Minoru Kiuchi, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Dr. Youcef Yousfi, Minister of Energy and Mines of Algeria

On January 19, from 4:30 P.M. local time (12:30 A.M. on January 20 Japan Time), Mr. Minoru Kiuchi, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, who was visiting Algeria, met with Dr. Youcef Yousfi, Minister of Energy and Mines of Algeria, alongside Mr. Koichi Kawana, JGC Corporation President and Representative Director, to discuss the Japanese nationals who have been taken hostage in Algeria. The overview of the meeting is as follows. Prior to the meeting, Vice-Minister Kiuchi met with Mr. Kawana and the two exchanged opinions on the response to be taken.
- Vice-Minister Kiuchi stated that it was distressing to hear the severe information concerning the well-being of Japanese nationals despite the numerous requests by the Japanese Government that the response to the incident should place the utmost priority on the lives of the hostages. He requested the swift provision of information concerning the Japanese nationals whose well-being and whereabout had not been confirmed yet.
- In response, Minister Yousfi said that he would work to provide information on the well-being of the Japanese nationals, and that the Ministry of Energy and Mines intended to continue to cooperate to the greatest extent on these issues.
