On Monday, June 25, from 2:35 p.m. for around 15 minutes, Mr. Koichiro Gemba, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, made a courtesy call at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on His Royal Highness Crown Prince Tupouto'a Ulukalala, Kingdom of Tonga, on his visit to Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the beginning of the meeting, Minister Gemba extended a heartfelt welcome to the Crown Prince's visit to Japan, expressed his condolences over the passing of His Majesty King George Tupou V of Tonga in March this year, and expressed his gratitude to the Crown Prince for receiving Their Imperial Highnesses Prince and Princess Hitachi at the airport when Their Imperial Highnesses visited Tonga to attend the state funeral. Minister Gemba also congratulated the upcoming marriage of the Crown Prince.
    Furthermore, Minister Gemba noted that the relationship between Japan and Tonga is very much amicable, including the relationship between the Imperial Household of Japan and the Royal Household of Tonga, and expressed his gratitude for Tonga's contribution to the Sixth Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM 6). Minister Gemba also stated he would like to cooperate on the development of Tonga in various sectors in the future such as the promotion of renewable energy, and would like to further strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

  2. Crown Prince Tupouto'a Ulukalala expressed his sympathy and condolences over the enormous damage inflicted by the Great East Japan Earthquake last year, along with his gratitude for the major contribution of Japan's economic cooperation to Tonga's national development and to the improvement of the living standard of Tonga's citizens.

  3. At the end of the meeting, Minister Gemba stated he hopes that Crown Prince Tupouto'a Ulukalala's visit will be fruitful, to which the Crown Prince replied that this visit is a great opportunity for His Royal Highness to learn about Japan, including Japanese culture, and that since His Royal Highness is scheduled to meet with people connected to the Imperial Household, His Royal Highness hopes to use the opportunity to contribute to strengthening ties between the Imperial Household of Japan and the Royal Household of Tonga.
