Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan on the Election of a new President in Egypt

- The Government of Japan welcomes the election of Dr. Mohamed Morsy, the leader of the Freedom and Justice Party, as the new President of Egypt on Sunday, June 24, through a peaceful and fair election amid the historical reforms in Egypt.
- The Government of Japan expects that the transfer of power from the military interim government to the President will be carried out at the end of the month as scheduled; that the problems surrounding the People's Assembly and the formulation of a new constitution will be settled through sincere dialogues between the political forces of Egypt; and that the complete transfer of power to the civilian government will be realized as early as possible. Furthermore, the Government of Japan hopes that Egypt will continue to contribute to the peace and stability in the region.
- The Government of Japan will continue to support Egypt's efforts for realization of democratization, and economic and social reforms.
