On Monday, June 11, Mr. Koichiro GEMBA, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with Mr. Sergey Evgenievich NARYSHKIN, Chair, State Duma of Russia, who was visiting Japan upon invitation by Mr. Takahiro YOKOMICHI, Speaker of the House of Representatives, from 11:00 am for approximately 30 minutes. An overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. Minister Gemba welcomed Mr. Naryshkin's regular visits to Japan for Russian cultural festivals since his days as the Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office, and both parties exchanged opinions on a wide range of topics such as Japan-Russia cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region, cultural exchanges between Japan and Russia, and the importance of inter-parliamentary exchanges between the two countries.

  2. Mr. Naryshkin expressed his expectation of Japanese firms' participation in development projects in Siberia and the Russian Far East. In response, Minister Gemba stated that he would like to open up the door to potentialities of Japan-Russia economic relations, and at the same time requested efforts by the concerned personnel of the Russian Parliament toward the improvement of the investment environment in Russia.

  3. In addition, when Minister Gemba pointed out the importance of solving the territorial issue, which has been the main issue between Japan and Russia, Mr. Naryshkin stated that he is confident that an environment for a solution for the issue would be created, along with the enhancement of cooperation in every field.
