Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan on the Presidential Election in Yemen

  1. Japan welcomes that the presidential election in Yemen took place generally in a smooth manner on Tuesday, February 21 (the same date, local time), with the support of the international community including Japan and its election monitoring, except in some areas that faced security deterioration.

  2. Japan regards this election to be of great significance for the ensuring of the peaceful transfer of power, based on the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) initiative agreed upon last November.

  3. Japan expects that H.E. Mr. Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi, the elected president, will officially be inaugurated as president, and that national dialogue, constitutional amendments and other matters will be steadily carried out under his leadership in accordance with the GCC initiative, and that stability in Yemen will be achieved as soon as possible.

  4. Japan has provided assistance of about 1.14 million US dollars for the fair and smooth implementation of this election. Japan intends to continue its cooperation as much as possible to secure the stability of Yemen.
