Japan-ROK Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talks
December 12, 2012
- On December 12, from 3:00 p.m., Minister for Foreign Affairs Koichiro Gemba held telephone talks with Mr. Kim Sung-hwan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Korea (ROK) on North Korea’s launch of a missile which it calls a “satellite” (attended by Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister Shuji Kira, Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister Kazuya Shimba, and others).
- Both Ministers shared the recognition that North Korea’s launch despite strong urges for self-restraint from the international community was a grave provocation which undermines peace and stability of the region, including Japan and the ROK as well as of the international community, and that it was important for the international community to take decisive action in response to this action, including responses at the UN Security Council, in light of the Presidential Statement of the UN Security Council of April, 2012.
- In addition, the two Ministers concurred that they would continue to make joint efforts to ensure cooperation with countries concerned, maintain contact between Japan and the ROK as well as among Japan, the ROK and the United States, and cooperate with other countries concerned, including China and Russia.
