Telephone Talks between Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Naoki Kazama and Acting U.S. Ambassador to Japan Mr. Kurt Tong on the Launching of a Missile by North Korea

December 12, 2012

  1.  On December 12, from 11:20 a.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. Naoki Kazama, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, held telephone talks with Mr. Kurt Tong, Acting U.S. Ambassador to Japan, on the launching of a missile, which North Korea calls a “satellite.”
  2.  Both parties shared the recognition that North Korea’s launching of the missile despite strong requests from the international community for self-restraint was a seriously provocative act which harms the peace and stability of the region, including Japan and the United States as well as the international community, in clear violation of United Nations (UN) Security Council Resolutions, and that therefore such an act cannot be tolerated.
  3.  Moreover, both parties shared the view that they would continue close coordination to deal with this matter, including the response at the UN Security Council.
