Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the decision regarding the construction of housing units in the West Bank
August 17, 2011
- The Government of Japan deplores that, according to the information, the Government of Israel approved the construction of 277 new housing units for Jewish people in Ariel, West Bank on August 15, following the series of approvals of the construction of Jewish housing units in East Jerusalem. Such acts go against the ongoing efforts by the international community to resume the negotiations for peace.
- The Government of Japan does not recognize any act that prejudges the final status of the territories in the pre-1967 borders. Japan calls upon Israel not to implement the construction plans.
- Japan strongly hopes that peace negotiations towards a two-state solution, under which Israel and a Palestinian State will live side by side in peace, will be resumed soon.
