Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Japan on the decision regarding the construction of housing units in the West Bank

July 22, 2011

  1. The Government of Japan is deeply concerned about the announcement of the Government of Israel regarding a bid for the construction of new housing units in settlements in the West Bank. Such an act goes against the efforts by the international community to resume negotiations and creates obstacles to the peace process.

  2. The Government of Japan does not recognize any act that prejudges the final status of the territories in the pre-1967 borders. Japan calls upon Israel not to implement the construction plans.

  3. Japan strongly hopes that peace negotiations towards a two-state solution, under which Israel and a Palestinian State will live side by side in peace, will be resumed soon.
