Statistics for the Number of Visas Issued in 2010

  1. 1,885,584 visas were issued at the diplomatic missions of Japan abroad for the year 2010, an increase of 34.8% from 2009*1,*2, underlining the increase in the number of tourists from China, Thailand, and Malaysia.
    *1 61 countries and regions have Visa Exemption Arrangements with Japan as of March 31 2011.
    *2 The number of visa issued differ from number of foreign nationals entering Japan which is released by the Ministry of Justice Immigration Bureau.

  2. The number of visas issued by nationality and region is as follows (in descending order): China (1,128,542), Thailand (190,313), Malaysia (101,955), Indonesia (70,134), the Philippines (66,466), India (48,433), Russia (45,843), Vietnam (26,764), ROK (22,977), Brazil (22,716). The number of visas issued in these top ten countries accounts for over 90% of the total number of visas issued.

  3. The number of visas issued by the diplomatic missions of Japan abroad is as follows (in descending order): Consulate-General of Japan in Shanghai (428,533), Embassy of Japan in China (350,601), Embassy of Japan in Thailand (184,275), Consulate-General of Japan in Guangzhou (142,042), Consulate-General of Japan in Shenyang (71,841), Embassy of Japan in Malaysia (60,826), Consulate-General of Japan in Manila (59,353), Consulate-General of Japan in Jakarta (51,660), Consulate-General of Japan at Chongqing (44,600), Consular Office of Japan in Dalian (43,395). The number of visas issued in these top ten diplomatic missions of Japan accounts for over 75% of the total number of visas issued. Among the top ten missions, six were in China.

  4. The number of Group Sightseeing Visas issued for Chinese nationals was 653,441, an increase of 72.4% from 2009 which was the largest number in history, and the number of Individual Sightseeing Visas issued for Chinese nationals*3 was 51,748.
    *3 Individual Sightseeing Visas for Chinese started from July 2009. The number of Individual Sightseeing Visas issued for Chinese nationals was 7,688 in 2009.
