Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the announcement on beginning of transition by the Afghan Government

Japan welcomes the announcement on March 22 by President Hamid Karzai of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan that the process of transition will start from June 22 this year in seven target areas covering approximately 25% of the population in its first phase.
Support from the international community remains important for the stability and reconstruction of Afghanistan. Japan will continue to support the Afghan-led nation-building efforts, in coordination with the international community.
