Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the recent situation in the Gaza Strip

March 24, 2011

  1. The Government of Japan is deeply concerned about the situation in and around the Gaza Strip for the past several days, where mortar attacks were launched from the Gaza Strip against southern Israel and where the Israel Defense Force airstrikes have caused death and injuries among civilians in the Gaza Strip.

  2. Japan strongly urges both Israel and Palestinian militants to immediately halt the recent attacks in order to prevent a further escalation of violence and increase in civilian casualties.

  3. Japan is convinced that the problems people in the Middle East face can never be solved through violence but only through negotiations and efforts to build mutual trust among parties to the conflict. Japan strongly hopes that all the parties concerned will make the utmost efforts to that end.
