Courtesy Call on Mr. Koichiro Gemba, Minister for Foreign Affairs, by the Committee on International Trade, European Parliament

- On Wednesday, October 5, commencing at 5:30 p.m. for around 30 minutes, Minister for Foreign Affairs Koichiro Gemba received a courtesy call from a delegation led by Professor Vital Moreira, Chairman of the Committee on International Trade, European Parliament, which is visiting Japan. Foreign Minister Gemba and the delegation exchanged opinions on matters of mutual concern and interest, such as strengthening the Japan-EU economic relationship, including a Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).
- Foreign Minister Gemba welcomed the visit to Japan by the delegation including Chairman Moreira, and expressed his gratitude for the support Japan had received from the EU at the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake. He also called for the easing of import restriction measures from the EU. Additionally, Foreign Minister Gemba spoke of Japan’s strong determination to work toward a Japan-EU EPA, and its desire to receive support from the European Parliament.
- Chairman Moreira voiced solidarity with Japan with regard to the earthquake, and also said that attention would be paid to problems relating to nuclear power. He said he had been able to deepen his understanding of Japan’s position on an EPA as a result of the visit to Japan, and said the European Parliament also will continue to show interest in, and contribute to, the negotiation process for a Japan-EU EPA.
