Heavy rain disaster in the state of Rio de Janeiro of the Federative Republic of Brazil (Message from Mr. Seiji Maehara, Minister for Foreign Affairs)

- The mountainous area in the state of Rio de Janeiro has been hit by heavy rain, from daybreak in the morning of 11th (Tue.) until the early morning of 12th (Wed.), which caused various damages, such as landslide, collapse of houses, floods. It was confirmed that the death toll has risen to 381 at 9:00 in the morning of 13th, local time, and 1,200 people in Nova Friburgo, 1,280 in Teresopolis have evacuated. The damage in these areas could be more extensive, in the near future.
- On 14th (Fri), Mr. Seiji Maehara, Minister for Foreign Affairs has sent a message to Mr. Antonio de Aguiar Patriota, Minister of External Relations of the Federative Republic of Brazil, in which he expressed deepest sympathy to serious damages caused by the heavy rain.
