Flood Disaster in the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (Message from Mr. Seiji Maehara, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Emergency Assistance)

  1. On January 14 (Fri), the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency relief goods (tents and sleeping mats) worth 20 million JPY to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) upon request of its Government in response to the disastrous floods caused by the unprecedented heavy rain in Sri Lanka. Mr. Seiji Maehara, Minister for Foreign Affairs has dispatched his message to Hon. Prof. G. L. Peiris, Minister of External Affairs of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, in which he expressed deepest sympathy to serious damages caused by the floods.

  2. Sri Lanka has been hit by heavy rain since the end of December, last year, which caused floods mainly in the Eastern Province, leaving many people isolated in the flooded areas, destroying houses, roads, and other infrastructure, and forcing people to evacuate in many areas.
