Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on shooting by Hamas’ military wing in the West Bank

September 1, 2010

  1. Japan strongly condemns the shooting by Hamas’ military wing which occurred on August 31 in the West Bank against a vehicle with four Israeli people, resulting in the death of these four people.  Japan expresses its heartfelt sympathy for the victims and sends condolences to the bereaved family.  Such an act cannot be justified for any reason, and any attempt to justify violence is unacceptable.

  2. Japan deeply deplores the fact that such an incident occurred while both Israeli and Palestinian parties and the international community are making their efforts to realize peace in the Middle East, especially re-launching direct negotiations by the Israeli and the Palestinian leaders.  Japan believes that the issues which people in the Middle East face can never be solved through violence but only through negotiation and efforts to build mutual trust among parties in conflicts.  Japan strongly hopes that Israel and the Palestinians will, despite such a tragic incident, carry out constructive negotiations for the achievement of the Middle East peace.
