  1. On August 12, for about 15 minutes from 11:30 a.m., Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs received a courtesy call in the reception room of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from Mr. Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

  2. At the start of the meeting, Minister Okada said that the participation by Director General Amano in the peace ceremonies in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as the first IAEA Director General to do so, signified a step forward toward the realization of “a world without nuclear weapons.” He also expressed the expectation that Japan and the IAEA will work together toward this goal. In response, Director General Amano thanked the Government of Japan for its leadership in the effort toward “a world without nuclear weapons,” and revealed the IAEA’s intention, for its part, to do its utmost in contributing toward the goal’s realization.

  3. The two leaders then exchanged views on the overall cooperative relationship between Japan and the IAEA, and confirmed that they will continue working together on this issue.
