Courtesy Call on Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs, by H.E. Dr. Mohammad Ali Fathollahi, Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia & Oceania of the Islamic Republic of Iran

On July 15 (Thu), at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs, met with H.E. Dr. Mohammad Ali Fathollahi, Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia & Oceania of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who is currently visiting Japan. The meeting began at 2:10 p.m. and lasted for approximately thirty minutes.
- (1) During the meeting, Foreign Minister Okada referred to the traditional relationship between Japan and Iran and expressed his expectation that candid views of opinions would help to deepen their bilateral relationship.
(2) In addition, concerning the Iranian nuclear issue, Foreign Minister Okada encouraged Iran to continue it’s efforts to remove the distrust of the international community regarding its nuclear activities including the suspension of approximately 20% uranium enrichment activities. He also expressed his hope that Iran would become a widely respected country in the international community by settling the nuclear issue.
- (1) In response, H.E. Dr. Fathollahi expressed his wish to continue dialogue between Japan and Iran at various levels and fields. In addition, he stated that Iran was prepared to advance cooperation with Japan on support for the reconstruction of Afghanistan.
(2) Regarding the nuclear issue, Iran explained its own basic stance, and stated that it would continue dialogue toward a diplomatic resolution of the issue.
