Statement by Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the recent situation in East Jerusalem

June 22, 2010
Japanese

  1. The Government of Japan is deeply concerned about the Jerusalem municipal planning committee’s approval on June 21 of a plan to build a national park demolishing Palestinian citizens’ houses in the Silwan neighborhood of East Jerusalem. The Government of Japan does not recognize any act that prejudges the final status of Jerusalem and the territories in the pre-1967 borders. Japan requests that the plan not be implemented.

  2. The Government of Japan continues to strongly request that both parties act in a way that enhances mutual confidence while the proximity talks are conducted between the Israeli and the Palestinian leaderships. Japan strongly supports the ongoing endeavors of the international community including the United States to promote the peace process, and expects that the current proximity talks will swiftly develop into the resumption of direct talks between the two parties.
