Telephone Conversation Between Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, and H. E. Mr. Celso Luiz Nunes Amorim, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federative Republic of Brazil

Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone conversation with H. E. Mr. Celso Luiz Nunes Amorim, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federative Republic of Brazil on May 19 (Wed) that lasted for approximately thirty minutes starting at 10:30 pm. The telephone conversation was conducted at the request of Brazil.
- Minister Amorim explained the background and contents of the new agreement mediated by Brazil and Turkey regarding the sending of Iranian-made low-enriched uranium out of the country. He also stated that it was important that Iran agreed for the first time about the sending of 1.2 tons of low-enriched uranium out of the country in writing, and this was an opportunity to solve the Iranian nuclear issue diplomatically.
- Minister Okada mentioned that he appreciated the efforts of Brazil and Turkey, and stated that implementation of the agreement was important. He also stated that with regard to the Iranian nuclear issue, even after talks about sending low-enriched uranium out of the country last year serious situation, including activities to enrich uranium to approximately 20% by Iran, had not changed. Minister Okada went on to say that he would like to have close consultation with relevant countries including Brazil now that a draft resolution was submitted in the United Nations Security Council.
- After a series of exchanges regarding this topic, the ministers agreed to remain in close contact. The meeting then came to an end.
