Meeting and Discussion between Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Dr. Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian President

- On February 9 (Tue), following a short meeting, Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs hosted a one-hour working dinner for Dr. Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian President.
- Minister Okada touched upon his experience of visiting the Palestinian territories as a member of the election monitoring team in 1996. He also declared that Japan was firmly making its utmost efforts towards the realization of Middle East peace, as Prime Minister Hatoyama had mentioned in the broad exchange of views on February 8.
- President Abbas highly appreciated Japan’s political and economic support towards Palestinians. He explained the improving situation of public safety and economy in the West Bank. He also explained that the US had made a proposal of launching proximity talks with Israel, that he was addressing the Palestinian reconciliation while Hamas did not consent to it despite serious efforts by Egypt, etc.
- President Abbas stressed that he and the Palestinian Authority would further promote the "Corridor for Peace and Prosperity" initiative led by Japan. He also highlighted the importance of Japan’s initiative to enhance cooperation with East Asian countries in order to help the Palestinians to build a Palestinian state.
