  1. The 5th Round of Negotiations for Japan-Peru Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) was held from February 1 (Mon) to 6 (Sat) in Lima.
  2. From Japan, Mr. Yasuo Tanabe, Deputy Director-General of the Economic Affairs Bureau, attended the meeting along with representatives from relevant ministries. From Peru, Mr. Carlos Posada, Director-General for Asia-Oceania Bilateral Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, attended the meeting along with representatives from relevant ministries.
    During the week, there were also meetings between Mr. Shigeru Nakamura, Ambassador for International Economic Affairs and Vice Minister Eduardo Ferreyros.
  3. In this round of the negotiations, both sides discussed a broad range of negotiating areas such as trade in goods, trade remedies, rules of origin, competition policy, government procurement, general provisions, dispute settlement, cooperation, improvement of business environment, customs procedures, SPS, TBT and IPR. Good progress has been made in the broad area. Both sides also exchanged views and positions on environment. The other areas such as cross-border trade in services will be discussed during the 10th (Wed) and 12th (Fri) of February.
  4. The meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere befitting the close and friendly relations that exist between the two countries.
  5. Both sides confirmed their intention to conclude the negotiation as soon as possible.
  6. Then next round of negotiations will be held in Tokyo, Japan in April.

The 1st round of negotiation took place in May, 2009 in Lima, the 2nd in July, 2009 in Tokyo, the 3rd in August, 2009 in Lima and the 4th in October, 2009 in Tokyo.
