Messages of condolences from Prime Minister Naoto Kan and Minister for Foreign Affairs Seiji Maehara on a coal mine explosion in New Zealand

- A major blast in the Pike River Coal Mine in New Zealand on November 24 deprived us of the hope of survival of all the twenty-nine miners trapped by an initial blast there on November 19.
- Today, Prime Minister Naoto Kan and Minister for Foreign Affairs Seiji Maehara sent messages of condolences to their counterparts of New Zealand, Prime Minister Rt. Hon. John Key and Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Murray McCully. The prime minister and the minister also expressed their sympathy toward the victims and the bereaved families.
- Minister Maehara had expressed his hope for the rescue of two trapped Australian miners during his visit to Australia on November 23; today, notwithstanding, he also had to sent a message of condolences on the loss to the Hon Kevin Rudd, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia.
